WiSe 23/24: Rituals and their Meaning in Society

The term "ritual" includes a wide range of actions that follow the same pattern and aim to maintain a certain state or order. Rituals are not only religious, they are found in all areas of society. For archeology, the study of rituals in past cultures is of central importance.
Based on the evidence for ritual practices in the ancient Near East, the social significance of rituals is questioned in the course. It is about the archaeological and written sources for the reconstruction of rituals and new methods of their interpretation. The participants will work out specific topics on rituals in the ancient Near East and its neighboring cultures and present the result of their work in a colloquium. The colloquium is conducted together with students and teachers from the University of Copenhagen. It is held once in Berlin (presentations by the students from Copenhagen), the other time in Copenhagen (presentations by the students from Berlin). The colloquium and the presentations are in English, the language of instruction in Berlin is English and German.
