WiSe 23/24: PS-Introduction to Linguistics II

Martin Konvicka

Kommentar

The scientific study of language is essential for our endeavour to understand communication, human psychology, social interaction, and language teaching. This course offers an introduction to the basic concepts and methods of linguistics and will enable you to carry out your first linguistic analyses and pursue more advanced linguistic research questions.

There will be an overview of the most important concepts, terminology, and characteristic phenomena on various levels of analysis (phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics). These will be demonstrated with examples from English as the primary object of investigation, although other familiar may occasionally be referred to as well. Finally, the course will provide an outlook on current methods and tools used for linguistic analysis.

In the end, students will be able to understand the language of linguistics and pursue further studies in the discipline. The seminar is complemented by an obligatory lecture (professor von Mengden, Monday: 16:00-18:00). You are going to finish with an exam covering the whole module (seminar & lecture).

Students who, for any reason, cannot attend the first class are kindly asked to contact me in advance.
