WiSe 23/24: V-Literatures of Medieval Britain: Renaissance Medievalism
Wolfram Keller
Kommentar
For a long time, the relationship between medieval and early modern English literature(s) was discussed in terms of a radical break; with the ‘re-birth’ of Antiquity, Renaissance intellectuals and artists saw themselves as breaking away from a medieval, pre-modern mindset. Recent work, however, has highlighted the many continuities between the ‘Middle Ages’ and the ‘Renaissance’. In this lecture, we will focus on the ways in which early modern literature continues to engage with the ‘medieval’, often in terms of self-conscious constructions of a progression from the medieval to the early modern. After a few preliminary sessions concerned with literary historical perceptions of the ‘period divide’ and theories of temporality, we will mainly discuss conceptualizations of the ‘medieval’ and the ‘modern’ in various plays by William Shakespeare.
