The idea of alienation, dispersed through Marx’s early critiques and postcolonial socialisms, resurfaced as a concept key for artistic practices and discourses by artists and critics practicing during decolonization on the African continent throughout the 1950s and 60s. Artists working between Africa, Europe, the US and the Caribbean contended with extracted and exhausted cultural heritages as much as with the emerging, arguably neocolonial, globalizing consumer culture, styles, and trends. For those practitioners alienation explicitly manifested as estrangement—Entfremdung—as well as actual material and epistemological expropriation (Entäusserung) wrought by Western colonialism, be it removed artifacts and resources or their appropriations by the so-called historical avant-garde and popular culture. In the seminar we study the transnational spectrum of artistic strategies that addressed this (post)colonial alienation and that mined its “creative potential” (Irele 1992) regarding novel visualities, producing what we may circumscribe as arts of alienation that remain generative for contemporary practice. Drawing on anti-colonial theory and cultural criticism by Alain Locke, Frantz Fanon, Abiola Irele, Olu Oguibe, Sylvia Wynter, Cedric Robinson, Issa Samb, Chika Okeke-Agulu, Achille Mbembe, Salah Hassan, Fred Moten and through reviewing artists’ works, statements, manifestos, and exhibition histories from Dakar, Lagos, Ibadan, Harare, London, Paris we aim to unpack alienation as an aesthetic and motive within twentieth century global “postwar” art history. Lecturer and artist Onyeka Igwe (University of Oxford) will join us for introductory sessions at the exhibition and research lab Savvy Contemporary in Wedding.
