WiSe 23/24: Rethinking Dance Historiography

How to approach dance history from a 21st-century perspective? In contrast to other fields like literature or history of art, there are few overarching publications on the history of theatre dance. None of these publications are up to date. A multi-volume dance history is currently in the making for the Bloomsbury cultural histories series, which will offer survey chapters from antiquity to the contemporary period. Yet next to this traditional if important endeavour, a range of challenging, creative and cutting-edge approaches to dance historiography have emerged in recent years, in both academia and artistic practice. They address for instance the imaginary histories of dance that range across the other arts and into political thought, engaging with the rewriting of the canon and the recuperation of marginalised positions through the lenses of queer and critical race studies. They also include historiographical projects that are not written at all, but performed. We will focus among others on danced reenactments, the (an)archive, bodily transmission and (mis)memory, and the role of the autobiographical account. As we explore new histories and historiographical methodologies, we will also learn about a selection of signature pieces. Artists and theorists whose work will be referred to include Jérôme Bel, Olga de Soto, Fabian Barba, Martin Stiefermann, Jacques Derrida, Diana Taylor, Rebecca Schneider, Mark Franko, Tommy de Frantz, Priya Srinivasan, and others.
