The related reading of pertinent Arabic texts on specific sports (and athleticism in general) elucidates their rationalization, valorization, criticism, and sets of imposing regulations of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh). The translations and discussions in class will demonstrate that these issues are expressions of wider contestations about the gendered human being, the importance of playful entertainment, and debates about proper social roles and responsibilities.
