This course accompanies the seminar on “Sociology in Arab Societies”. It is recommended but not formally required to attend both courses. In the seminar we will familiarize ourselves with the history and characteristics of sociology in Arab countries mainly via English secondary literature. In turn, in this course, we will exclusively work with Arabic sources. These mostly consist of primary and secondary literature authored by Arab sociologists, but we will also include an Arabic video lecture and will likely have a live lecture and discussion with an Arab sociologist in our class. This course is decidedly an opportunity to practice Arabic research skills in a secure setting, without expecting proficiency therein. Still, the completion of Arabic IV or the proof of equivalent skills is a prerequisite for attending the course. Should all participants prefer to conduct the course in German, we will do so. Aims: participants will - become acquainted with the genre of Arabic sociological writing - through translation thoroughly engage with selected topics and concepts of Arabic sociology - have improved their practical skills in Arabic - have strengthened their independent research skills - confidently know the surplus of bringing Arabic sources to English-speaking debates Schließen
