‘Here queer is always about race’, Clare Croft writes in the introduction to her edited collection, Queer Dance: Meanings and Makings. In recent years ‘queer’ has become a broad term for non-normative readings, performances, and political strategies. Traditionally associated with LGBTQI* studies, ‘queering’ is now also considered a decolonial action and methodology. This seminar attempts to trace and probe the intersections of gender, sexuality, and race, and address their embodied possibilities in the field of contemporary dance. It engages with both decolonial and queer theories, and pairs them with dance’s corporeal theorising. Choreographers and theorists will include among others Sara Ahmed, Anne Anlin Cheng, nora chipaumire, Saidiya Hartman, Eisa Jocson, Olivia Hyunsin Kim, Oxana Chi, Ligia Lewis, José Esteban Muñoz, Joana Tischkau, Trajal Harrell, Christina Sharpe, and Rolando Vázquez. What is gained in the bonding of queer and decolonial critique? What is lost in terms of critical specificity? And how does contemporary dance bring about, navigate, and challenge queer and decolonial intersections?
