WiSe 23/24: Projektcolloquium: Fictional Realism

This Projektcolloquium investigates arts research methods and performance/artistic practices as hinged together by their mutual engagement with the ambiguity of the ‘real’. We explore how the art(ist) and the research(er) dialogue between theory and praxis, between dreamy imagination and physical creation, between unimaginable feats and real, vulnerable bodies. So, how do research ethics play out in this creative environment? What are we doing and who are we serving when we research art and performance? At its center, this Projektcolloquium investigates you, the researcher, as a creative agent, as performer in your own right, and explores the possible compromised and empowered contours of such a position.
In its first half of the semester, the course formulates a Fictional Realist history of performance and its exhibition, exploring works that, while playing between ‘fact’ and ‘fake’, have triggered explosive historical consequences and reshaped the social milieu. Along the way, we will look at the bleed of art into political imagination and the influence of performance tactics on peoples’ movements and protest actions (as well as vice versa). In the second half of the semester, the course opens up to research experiments and to the impulses of its participants, transforming into a lab in which initial research ideas are generated, queried, and expanded.
