Sex and sexuality are among the most important objects of philosophy and feminist philosophy in particular, both in its descriptive and normative aspects: from The Second Sex to Amia Srinivasan and Catharine MacKinnon, there is no doubt that, on the one hand, the sexual objectification of women is a key element of their oppression, and, on the other hand, that the possibility of a positively good sexual life is constantly prevented by the patriarchal organization of society. Psychoanalysis has a paradoxical place in this relationship of feminist philosophy to sexuality: on the one hand, it is undeniable that Freud's work has provided a decisive framework for a feminist analysis of sexuality, on the other hand, the essentialism and transphobia of some psychoanalysis, as well as the use of psychoanalysis to justify the imposition of an androcentric model of normal sexuality on women and, at times, to justify sexual violence against women and children, gives good reason for feminists to be extremely suspicious of psychoanalytic theories. In this seminar, we will read both psychoanalytic texts over sexuality, seduction, and women, and philosophical critiques – especially feminist ones – of psychoanalysis, in the hope to propose an ethical, political and epistemological critique of the role psychoanalysis can play in the 21st century outside of its clinical one (this class is not on psychoanalytical therapeutical work).
