Hinweise für Studierende

The course will be taught in English and held Thursdays 4-6 pm. It is open to students of AVL who are either in the master’s or have completed their first year of the bachelor’s. Students of other subjects are also welcome. A good knowledge of English is expected.

A direct enrollment via Campus Management will not be possible. Interested applicants must submit a statement of purpose written in English (no longer than 1 page), indicating their motivation for participating in the seminar, relevant personal and academic interests, language skills, as well as their subjects and semesters of study.

This course takes French artist Robert Filliou’s canonical quote “L’art est ce qui rend la vie plus intéressante que l’art” (tr.: Art is what renders life more interesting than art) as a departure point for an investigation of the intimate and complex bond between the acts of creating and living. The instructor, Colombian-Ecuadorian artist and graphic memoirist Powerpaola, is interested in how art can sharpen and extend one’s sense of selfhood through an exploration of the relation between self and other, between the self and the world. The seminar sessions will concretely treat the fields of autofiction and self-portraiture, placing a robust focus on intermedial text-image constellations and introducing students to the work of artists as diverse as Clarice Lispector, Hebe Uhart, Susan Sontag, Frida Kahlo, Ulli Lust and Julie Doucet. To further prompt new and innovative answers to the question of how life can be reflected and refracted in our artistic practices, students will be encouraged to probe the limits of expression in weekly practical exercises, such as journaling, writing letters to friends, ghosts, or strangers, and drawing portraits and comics. The aim will be to generate an organic and spontaneous approach to creating art, one that is inspired by what is directly in front of oneself and concerned with the specific ways in which intimacy and personal experience can be made publicly accessible.
