For BA-Economics students: students must attend also the seminar “Social Policies in Latin America” together with this lecture in order to complete the module “Finanz- und Wirtschaftspolitik: Ausgewählte Fragestellungen”.

This course offers an introduction to the economic analysis of social policies, with a regional focus on Latin America. Students will become familiar with public policy design, implementation, and evaluation from a theoretical and empirical perspectives. In addition, special attention is paid to political economy processes of policymaking: why are some social policies adopted but not others? Why do policymakers design and implement policies in certain ways? A wide variety of policies and sectors are covered: poverty, inequality, labor markets, education, health, (in)security, gender, environment, among others.
