Writing Global Histories of Dance Modernism

In recent years, many scholars of dance modernism have been working on transnational approaches and multiple modernities. They question the focus on European and North American centres of modernist dance to explore alternative models of movement innovation across the globe. Writing Global Histories of Dance Modernism will introduce students to new research on global dance modernisms. Questions to be addressed will include: How do we integrate the possibilities and pressures of the local and the national with the impacts of global flows? How do we highlight the exchange between the Global South and the Global North without reinforcing the narrative of the West and the Rest? And how do we recover the subtle changes that concepts and methods undergo as they move from one local or national context to another? The seminar will engage with topics including transnational (mestizo) modernisms in Mexico and other Latin American countries, concepts of race, nation and “environmental dance” in Brazil, post-colonial dance imaginaries in the Carribean, modernist aesthetics in Korean dance, and (post)nationalist histories of dance modernism in Eastern Europe and Russia. The seminar is accompanied by a Lektüre-Übung. Taking the Übung in addition to the seminar is not required; it is an offer for those who would like to delve deeper into the reading on global dance modernisms as well as learning about its underlying post- and decolonial theories.
