The course covers China’s engagement with – and role in – international institutions. It provides students with an overview of the different organizations, negotiation fora and formalized structures that permeate international politics, as well as a conceptual grounding in international relations theory. The seminar will allow students to critically reflect on the rise of China and its impact on different elements of international order. Readings will, amongst others, cover China’s engagement with the established, Bretton Woods institutions of international politics (the IMF, World Bank and UN), China’s shifting position in international climate, health and digital governance, and the role of new China-backed institutions in global politics.
