The goal of the course is to familiarize students with the achievements in the field of magnetic molecules, specifically spin-crossover molecules (SCO) and single-molecule magnets (SMMs), obtained through the use of various spectroscopic techniques. The lecture focuses on the bridge between applied and basic sciences by exploring the research done at FU Berlin on magnetic molecules as well as recent work from literature. This course explains the use of different spectroscopic methods, such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and Mössbauer spectroscopy, to understand the electronic and magnetic properties of materials, with a special focus on SCO molecules.

Recently, single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have gained attention due to their ability to behave as qubits. In the lecture, we will discuss why SMMs are important, how the field has developed, and where we reach with the development of SMMs to behave as qubits.

Topics of the lecture include: Introduction to Magnetic Molecules: Spin Crossover Molecules, Different Spectroscopic Methods: Measurements and Analysis, Influence of Substrates on the Magnetic Properties of Molecules, Application of Magnetic Molecules and Spin Crossover Molecules: A bridge between basic understanding and applications: a way to quantum qubits using SMMs.
