Kommentar
Political participation has been described as "the lifeblood of representative democracy" (Norris, 2002). The legitimacy of democracies and the optimal allocation of public goods within them depend on a politically active population. However, not everyone participates equally or receives the same attention from decision-makers. Political engagement (and ultimately political influence) reflects social and economic inequalities. This seminar has two main objectives: (1) to introduce students to the literature on political participation, and (2) to provide students with methodological tools to conduct quantitative analysis on the topic. Theoretically, we will discuss the concept of political participation, examine its individual and contextual determinants, and explore its effects. We will pay special attention to the intersection of political participation with socioeconomic status, gender, age, and migration. Methodologically, the seminar will provide an introduction to the free statistical software R and introduce relevant quantitative methods for studying patterns of political participation. We will begin with exercises in exploratory data analysis before moving on to more advanced regression techniques. The seminar will draw on data from large survey projects, voter turnout databases, and protest event datasets. No prior knowledge of statistics or programming is required. Through regular hands-on exercises, students will acquire the skills to perform quantitative analyses on their own. Schließen
