WiSe 24/25: Deconstructing Hellenism: Iranian Perspectives

In the centuries following the conquest of the Achaemenid Empire by Alexander, the Iranian world is commonly depicted as being a recipient of, or as reacting against the cultural phenomenon of Hellenism. Research conducted in recent decades has been able to demonstrate that this traditional view is mostly based on a scarcity of sources and our incomplete understanding of them. Iranian traditions evidently survived the collapse of Achaemenid authority and continued to have a history of their own, despite many developments remaining hard to trace for historians. Greek influence, despite its strong visibility, is often astonishingly limited. This class attempts to review and analyse the material available to us and to define the cultural, social and political agency of Iranian polities and societies between the fall of the Achaemenid and rise of the Sasanian Empires.
