Zusätzl. Angaben / Voraussetzungen

We will begin by discussing outer-sphere electrochemistry, i.e. the process where an electron tunnels through the electrochemical double layer to reach a redox center in the outer-sphere. Rudolph A. Marcus received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1992 for work on this process.

In the second part of the course, we compare traditional Marcus theory with inner-sphere electrochemistry. Inner-sphere reactivity involves the movement of an ion through the electrochemical double layer, where it needs to be (de)solvated before it can adsorb onto the reactive surface. We will explore extensions of Marcus theory and recent research that underscores the need for a more general framework that was developed by Eyring, Evans, and Polanyi. This section is particularly relevant to electrochemical technology, such as electrocatalysis, and will guide the students to the current boundaries of knowledge in this area.

Overall, the course aims to provide a broad understanding of electrochemical energy conversion and to highlight its link to other fields, such as biocatalysis. Schließen
