HS-Literature and Media: Neo-Historical Fictions—Aesthetics of Desire
Caroline Kögler
Kommentar
In this seminar, we will engage with current re-imaginations of the eighteenth and long nineteenth centuries across a range of media, from novels to films and series. As a specific angle, we will link the concept of neo-historical media to the concept of queer desire, broadly understood: a desire for the past to be, or look, a certain way; a desire for re-imagined futures; a desire for desires that were or could have been, or that still are in the process of becoming. In this way, queer theories, queer historical scholarship, and affect theories will guide our way alongside Neo-Victorian scholarship and matching scholarship on re-imaginations of the long eighteenth-century.
Texts (novels, films, and series) to be discussed include:
- Adam Thirlwell, The Future Future (2023)
- “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” (2019)
- “Bridgerton” (2020—present)
- Sue Collins, The Confessions of Frannie Langton (2019) & the Screen Adaptation (2022)
- Nell Stevens’ Briefly, a Delicious Life (2022)
- “The Happy Prince” (2018) [film adaptation based on Oscar Wilde’s life & oeuvre]
- Ellis Avery, The Last Nude (2012)
