Since the state commissioned study „Muslimfeindlichkeit - Eine deutsche Bilanz“ [Hostility towards Muslims – a German Bilanz], conducted by the „Independent Expert Commission Hostility towards Muslims“, political authorities in Germany have finally acknowledged anti-Muslim racism as urgent and serious. At the same time, both public and academic debates on the topic still revolve around questions of adequate terms and concepts. Moreover, we can still observe tangible deflections amongst the political elite regarding the relevance and acuteness anti-Muslim racism. This is often spelled out in the relativization, if not denial of racism generally, and of anti-Muslim racism in particular, in the hierarchization of antisemitism and “other forms of discrimination” (see Dische-Becker 2024) as well as in the recurrent demarcations been “legitime critique of Islam” and “illegitimate hostility against Islam”.
This seminar will use these debates and its implications for the analysis of the various dimensions of anti-Muslim racism both in Germany and in Europe more broadly. We will pose questions about the various dimensions of anti-Muslim racism in their contemporary configurations as well as in their genealogies. We will ask questions about the legitimate spokes-person of the phenomenon in public discourses. And we will analyze the location of this particular kind of racism within the vast research on racism more generally. Next to close readings of academic approaches and public discourses we will interact with civil society actors engaged in the field in Germany. Schließen
