Exploring Digital Culture in North America & Beyond

While historically in its infancy, digital culture has already reshaped some of the key tenets of modern life in North America and beyond - such as the creation, sharing and distribution of knowledge, interpersonal communication, security and privacy and even the very foundations of democracy. In this course, we’ll discuss various phenomena at the heart of digital culture using key theoretical concepts and multimedia case studies. From Platform Capitalism to Participatory Culture, from Technological Determinism to Parasocial Relationships, we’ll cover a wide variety of hot-button issues with the goal of engendering digital literacy skills as we explore them together. More broadly, we’ll ask: what even is digital culture and what does it mean today? What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of an increasingly digitizing world? How does it affect our society, our relationships and even ourselves? And what does an even more digitized future look like?
