What is the substance of the fantasies that sustain the natural order and reality of the world? What happens when these fantasies loose their grounding in a living tradition? What forces move us towards or against changes? What might these transformations incur? As Valeska Gert Visiting Professor, Israeli director and choreographer Saar Magal will work with students on performance research methods of deconstructing myths and stories from both ancient and current narratives within the three abrahamic traditions and societies. In this course, Magal will share research forms that she employs for the creation of performative and scenic material within her physical theater. Students will explore topics, stories, emotional and visual journeys, and strive to engage a convergence of notions, objects, fictional, phenomenological literature and other materials to create new contexts for movement and narrative. Magal will share the paths of her rehearsal process, where she empowers a collaborative environment or a feeling of a “playground" in the room, to enable “games”. These “games” incorporate the method of an improvisational system which trains performers of different disciplines, such as actors, dancers and musicians, to use their bodies, voices and senses to create meaning and form a group. As part of this system, Magal sets up several points of awareness which a performer can use while working, that provide a vocabulary for thinking about and acting upon visual and narrational contexts and creates an opportunity for spontaneous interactions that discover new moments in theatre. In the rehearsal room, Magal attempts to create a technique for actor and dancer training that is best experienced and not verbalized. This process, by its nature, is meant to encourage more risk-taking and bolder choices in pe rforming that are not confined by any particular expectations. Through an improvised exploration of preconceived staging concepts and scenic ideas, artistic discovery is possible on a personal and group level. Schließen
