Workload and assessment: During the semester you will be required to read around 20 pages each week. You will qualify for 5 ECTS points if your attendance is satisfactory, you engage with the course materials, and you pass the examination at the end of the semester.

Subject: On 27 June 2024 a major reform of German citizenship law took effect, which makes it simpler for immigrants and their descendants to become German citizens. According to the government the reform should be understood as a measure designed to promote integration. Arguably it is the most prominent component of an integration policy developed by German governments over the past two decades.
Program: We will take the changes in German citizenship law as a starting point for an analysis of integration in its economic, political and other social aspects. We will consider its definition with regard to work, language and education, including pre-school education, drawing in particular on the PISA study run by the OECD. We will debate the meaning of cultural integration, especially with regard to religion, comparing it to concepts like assimilation and multiculturalism. And we will set the concept of integration in historical perspective, tracing its connection to postwar immigration on one hand and to German reunification on the other.
