US American Warzone Nursing post-1865: Realities vs Perceptions

What do we think of when imagining a nurse? Despite vitally important life-saving work in each war the US has entered, popular perceptions of nursing have not been updated to match the reality of their role. In this course we will seek to answer this question by finding and crafting themes of perception in each era we study. To find these themes we will compile a timeline of wartime nursing history, marking advancements achieved by the efforts of nurses in each war in which they served and placing these within themes of perception. To help frame this topic we will use narratives from the nurses themselves, as well as from their peers, and both text and visual media primary sources. Throughout this semester, we will gain an appreciation for what others are missing: that the experiences of nurses at war can be captivating adventures full of camaraderie, danger, and critical life-saving medical work in immensely difficult conditions. The foundation of the class will be based on materials I have collected and themes I consider important. However, this class will also give students opportunities to work as historians and to shape the direction of the course based on their work and well-founded opinions. I will help guide student’s study of primary and secondary sources. I encourage students to take ownership of their work, and to enthusiastically support their perspectives and interests. To successfully pass this course, students are required to complete the following. Compose weekly précis focused on responses to key ideas; this will help prepare students for class discussions. In one presentation per student group, they will present these findings and arguments, contributing to the direction of our class discussion and perception of their historical subject. Overall, students are expected to come to class prepared to participate, to periodically work in teams, and to take an exam at the end of the term. Finally, I encourage students to always feel comfortable to speak with me about their course feedback, concerns or personal needs about the course. This can be done during my weekly office hours, or via email. Schließen
