US Foreign Policy: Domestic Sources, Conflicts, and Expectations
Julia Simon
Kommentar
Recently, established certainties of US foreign policy seem to have become called into
question. Politics and considerable policy divisions between the two major parties
increasingly extend ‘beyond the water’s edge’. Given the key role of the United States in
Western security alliances and with regard to currently escalating political as well as
violent conflicts around of the world, the stakes of the upcoming presidential and
congressional elections certaintly could not be higher. At the same time, we also need to
consider the broader ecosystem of actors that are, formally and informally, involved in
foreign policy-making. This seminar begins by mapping out and then zooming in on each
of the institutions and actors that are relevant to the field of foreign policy. In a next step,
the seminar focuses on the conceptual and political underpinnings of foreign policy
approaches. In particular, we will enage with historically more dominant and more fringe
visions and ideas of American foreign policy and the global role of the United States.
Against this backdrop and with a focus on the di??erent strand of American conservatism,
we will analyze and discuss a range of examples that coverer the four US administrations
since September 11. Schließen
