Jewish-Muslim Relations in Colonial and Postcolonial Times
Avner Ofrath
Kommentar
The colonial and postcolonial age brought a wave of upheavals to the lives of Jewish and Muslim communities – and gave rise to the very notion of Jews and Muslims as groups defined primarily by their mutual relations. How did European encroachment, Ottoman reforms and emerging nationalisms affect the relations between Muslims and Jews in the Arabic-speaking world and Europe? How did Jews and Muslims respond to such changes? And which idées fixes of the two ‘groups’ have emerged in European culture and thought from the late 19th century onwards? This seminar approaches these questions through primary sources and scholarly literature from and on selected sites of the triangular encounter between Jews, Muslims, and Europe, from the Napoleonic expedition to Egypt to the encounters and challenges of the postcolonial age.
