Seminar
Gender and International Politics
Julia Simon
Kommentar
The attention devoted to questions relating to gender has steadily increased in the study and practice of international politics during the past decades. This seminar seeks to unfold, scrutinize, and critically reflect upon the different facets of these developments. It starts by introducing different theoretical perspectives, including comparative Foreign Policy Analysis, gender and queer theories, and theories of norm diffusion. Each of these theoretical perspectives renders visible and allows us to analyze specific ways in which gender and global politics intersect. We will then draw on these perspectives to analyze a range of empirical contexts and contemporary example cases that cast light on the relevance of questions of gender in international organizations, international migration, international security, diplomacy, (illiberal) transnational activism, and ideas of internationalism more broadly. The substantial conceptual and empirical knowledge accumulated during the semester will enable students to identify and discuss the methodological orientations, analytical potentials, and the respective limits of different approaches. This will provide them with the necessary tools and skills to conduct their own research. Schließen
