Theories and Methods in Modern Art
Eric de Bruyn
Kommentar
In this master seminar, we will discuss the development of critical approaches within the field of modern and contemporary art history. Based on close readings of pivotal texts by art historians and theorists, we will acquaint ourselves with the main methodologies of art history (e.g. formalism, feminism, (post-)structuralism, social art history, visual studies, post-colonialism, etc.) as well as the theoretical frameworks upon which they rely. The objective of the seminar is not to construct a “toolbox” of abstract methods, but to inquire why certain questions and methods emerged at certain moments in this history of the discipline. What, in short, are the “politics of theory”? Why do we see a shift in art historical perspectives over time? How has the field of art history itself been altered or expanded to include new questions and conceptual frameworks (e.g. transculturalism), areas of study (e.g. Black studies) or re-defined in relation to adjacent fields of research (e.g. media studies). The seminar will be conducted in English and German. Schließen
