Stefan Maneval

Comments

The seminar conveys knowledge of the early history of Islam, from the lifetime of Muhammad to the Umayyad period, while simultaneously reflecting on the epistemological premisses of knowledge production with regard to this period. What data is our knowledge of Islam in Late Antiquity based on? What are the archives that researchers of this period can rely on, and how do they interpret them? Which are the larger narratives informed by different empirical and theoretical approaches? Guided by questions such as these, key texts produced within the fields of Islamic studies and Early Islamic History are read and critically discussed - with regard to their theses, the archives and data they draw on, as well as the methods and theoretical approaches they use. close
