Sorani is the central dialect of the Kurdish language, which belongs to the north-western Iranian group within the Indo-European language family. Central Kurdish has two main subgroups Sorani in northern Iraq up to the Little Zab river, and Mukri in adjacent Iranian province of Kordestan, with pockets (by earlier deportations) elsewhere in Iran. This course is designed to introduce students to the modern Sorani. In this seminar students learn how to read and write in the Kurdish script (based on the Arabic script), and learn the basic features of grammar. The seminar is offered in German for Bachelor students. Prior knowledge of Sorani is not required. The seminar is accompanied by a tutorial, where the students have the chance to practice the new grammar items with the native speaker. close
