WiSe 22/23: Northern Kurdish I (Kurmanci)

Khanna Usoyan

Comments

There is no standard classification for the divisions of Kurdish dialects. Kurmanji is the northern dialect of the Kurdish language, which belongs to the north-western Iranian group within the Indo-European language family. It is spoken by the overwhelming majority of Kurds in Turkey, Syria, in northern Iraq, in Khorasan (Iran), Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenia, the Ukraine, Russia, and in other diaspora communities. The political situation of the Kurds and the absence of official institutions supporting the development of the language, as well as assimilation attempts in some countries, has influenced the development of Kurmanji, and it still faces many unsolved issues, e.g. that of standardisation. This course is designed to introduce students to the modern Kurmanji. In this seminar students learn how to read and write in the Kurdish alphabet based on the Roman script developed by Mîr Celadet Bedirxan in the early 1930s as presented in the periodical Hawar, learn the basic features of grammar and conversational Kurmanji. The seminar is offered in English for Master students. Prior knowledge of Kurmanji is not required. The seminar is accompanied by a tutorial, where the students have the chance to practice the new grammar items with the native speaker. close
