WiSe 22/23: Feminist and Queer Readings of Late Ottoman Empire and Modern Turkey

Ezgi Saritas

Information for students

One session (Oct 25) will take place on campus!

Comments

The one-semester course offers an opportunity to read fictions and self-narratives from the late Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey from a queer and feminist perspective. By exploring themes of education, class, nation, religion, and love and eroticism through a variety of texts, the course will enable students to view the history of the late Ottoman Empire and early Republican Turkey from an intersectional perspective. The course will familiarize students with some prominent Ottoman and modern Turkish-language women writers such as Fatma Aliye, Zabel Yesayan, Nezihe Muhiddin, Halide Edip Adivar, and Suat Dervis while introducing texts by Nahid Sirri Örik, Peyami Safa, and Ismayil Hakki Baltacioglu with queer themes. close
