In the most basic sense, a sound or music studio is a space that makes technology available to musicians, that facilitates communication between technicians and artists, and is devoted to the development of new inventions, instruments, and musical works. Studios became integral components of the circuits of music production beginning in around 1900. And since then, audiences of music lovers and amateurs have been interested in comprehending the nuts and bolts of studio work as a way of better understanding the music that they listen to. In this seminar, we will investigate the practices, networks, technologies, and politics of different studios, from different historical periods and geographies: broadcasting studios at radio stations, experimental sound effects’ studios for film, recording studios at well-known music labels or in bedrooms of up-and-coming musicians and sound artists. In addition, we will visit several studios in Berlin and welcome musicians and instrument builders in our seminar, who will provide us with a glimpse into their studio work. We will also participate in a recording session.
