Mathematics is, among other things, the language of theoretical natural sciences. While qualitative reasoning about theoretical issues in the sciences pursued in terms of natural language is important, e.g., when we build intuition about the phenomena we observe in nature or when we wish to efficiently exchange ideas, there is no way around utilizing the mathematics language if we aim for precise reproducibility of scientific procedures, provably justified utilization of computational methods in scientific research, or quantitative accuracy. This course lays some of the mathematical foundations the geo-sciences heavily rely upon in their everyday research and applications.
Specifically, in the course of the course of the first semester, of this two-semester course, we will encounter:
Functions of one variable; limit values; infinite series; derivatives; applications of differential calculus; Taylor approximation; integration; the principal theorem of differential and integral calculus; applications of integral calculus; complex numbers; and simple differential equations.
