WiSe 22/23: Translating the East

Xiaolu Gou

Comments

In what ways might Western readers approach East Asian literature? How can we read the translation of Asian poetry and prose through the web of cultural differences and in some cases censorship? In this course we will read work from China, Korea, Vietnam and Japan. We will examine how and what particular types of Eastern works have been translated into English and other Western languages, and how recent migration and multilingualism have impacted this translation practice. We shall also pay special attention to the writers who have migrated and those who are in exile, as their works offer unique perspectives on language and global politics. The authors we will study include the two Chinese Nobel Laureates in Literature, Gao Xingjian and Mo Yan. We will also consider memoirs by exiled writers Ha Jin from the United States and Jung Chang from Britain, along with prose by novelist/filmmaker Dai Sijie and poetry by Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo. We will also explore works by the Japanese writer Haruki Murakami, the Japanese-German author Yoko Tawada, and Korean novelist Han Kang. After a consideration of the differences between two fundamentally different writing systems (alphabetical and pictogram), we will try some translation exercises. No specific language skills required, all are welcome. close
