WiSe 22/23: Ambivalences of (Berlin) sciences and our responsibility as scientists: an interdisciplinary analysis of the dual-use issue

Dual-use refers to the multiple usability of university research for both civilian / beneficial and military / socially harmful purposes. In this tutorial we will question our own role as researchers and analyse dual-use challenges across different areas of study in an interdisciplinary way. For this purpose, we want to identify commonalities, differences, feasibility, and transferability of different dual-use approaches in relation to scientific freedom, economic interests and social responsibility. We will work in an application-oriented way and students will design their own research projects.
The tutorial is aimed at students at all levels and of all fields of study since all scientific disciplines are potentially confronted with the dual-use problematic. The course will be held mainly in German, but students are free to express themselves in English and texts in English will be read as well. The first meeting on the 17/10 on campus is open for everyone interested.
