Comments
This seminar offers a broad overview of the history of capitalism in the Americas, from the colonial era up to the present time. A guiding theme of the seminar is how different forms of capitalism in the Americas have been shaped by an interaction of specific local conditions with global political and economic forces. Topics include the short and long-term consequences of specialization patterns, the creation of institutions and their long-term path dependencies, social conflict and inequality, slavery and wage labor, as well as the changing paradigms of economic ideas that shaped the continent during the twentieth century. We approach these topics by reading and discussing texts both from history and economics. Seminar language is English (unless all students prefer German), while a basic knowledge of Spanish will be an advantage. close
