Seminar
SoSe 23: The International Politics of Human Rights
Tobias Berger
Comments
This is an advanced theory seminar. It explores contemporary trends in international human rights scholarship in International Relations and Global History. It proceeds by way of close readings of seven to eight recent monographs (e.g. works by Stephen Hopgood, Jessica Whyte, Sumi Madhok, Azizah Ahmed). The course places special emphasis on the various ways in which actors from the global south have both shaped and contested international human rights. It focusses on recent advances in the critical historiography of human rights as well as more contemporary trends. Four of the monographs are fixed by the course provider; the remaining books will be selected based on our seminar discussions and I would like to encourage all students to make suggestions for titles that they would like to read with the seminar groups. close
