- Image quality: image contrast – spatial resolution – signal noise – digitalisation of analog signals / storage in numerical form – sampling rate / aliasing.
- Interaction between electromagnetic radiation and matter – particles – electromagnetic radiation – absorption of energy – dosage – radiobiology.
- X-ray imaging: X-ray tube assembly – radiation generation – projection method – magnification – scattering – detectors – dual energy method – applications.
- Computed tomography: technical development – radiation source – detectors – image reconstruction – Hounsfield values – image quality – image artefacts – applications.
- Methods of nuclear medicine: functional imaging – radioactive decay modes – coincidence – generation of radionuclides in cyclotrons – tracers – detectors – image reconstruction – quality assurance – applications.
- Magnetic resonance imaging I: magnetism – nuclear spin – excitation – signal acquisition – relaxation mechanisms – signal reconstruction in 1D – applications of 1D techniques.
- Magnetic resonance imaging II: magnetic field gradients – spatial resolution – spin echo – gradient echo – image reconstruction – pulse sequences.
- Magnetic resonance imaging III: image contrast – advanced imaging techniques – image artefacts – applications – patient exclusion criteria.
- Demonstration MRI-Scanner (venue location: Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin).
- Ultrasound imaging: properties of longitudinal waves – generation / detection of ultrasound waves – acoustic impedance – reflection – scattering – data acquisition modes – Doppler methods – image artefacts – applications.
- Demonstration ultrasound imaging (portable scanner).
- Consolidation of the course contents: presentation of recent medical imaging related research projects of the Institutes of Medical Informatics and Radiology.
