SoSe 23: Jewish Responses to 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion'
Lukas Mühlethaler
Comments
Published in Imperial Russia in 1905, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion are an antisemitic text with superlative-defying real-world consequences. Though the Protocols were shown to be a fabrication as early as 1921 and especially during the 1934-1935 Bern trials, they became “an atrocity-producing narrative” (Charles B. Strozier). The first few sessions of the course are dedicated to the text itself and recent scholarly literature with the goal of better understanding the Protocols’ literary and cultural origins, their connection to violence and genocide, and the reasons for their continued appeal throughout the world and especially in Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East. The main focus of course, however, is on Jewish responses to the Protocols in the past hundred years leading up to the present time. close
