SoSe 23: Automatic text analysis in R
Sünje Paasch-Colberg
Comments
The methods of automated text analysis have developed rapidly in recent years - at the same time, there is an increasing amount of text data that can be used to investigate social science issues. Thus, these methods are gaining importance in the field of communication science, but also in political science or sociology.
This practically oriented methods course gives an introduction to procedures of automated text analysis in R/R-Studio. R is a programming language that offers a very flexible processing, analysis and visualization of data for all common operating systems without a paid license. R also offers efficient and powerful packages for the field of text analysis, which are constantly being further developed. In this methods exercise, these procedures are first introduced and then applied by students in the context of small research projects.
To do this, participants can work with three different corpora that have been made available for this course: a corpus containing all Bundestag debates since 1949, a corpus of the Islam coverage of eight German newspapers, or a corpus of the migration coverage of the taz.
Previous knowledge of R/R-Studio is an advantage for participation, but is not required. However, participants should be willing to learn the basics of R programming. In addition, participants should bring their own laptop. close
