Comments
In this seminar we will look at the book "Eurocentrism: The World after the Neocolonial Phase" by Samir Amin, a Marxist economist and theorist from Egypt. The book is a critique of the Eurocentric view of modernity and its impact on the global South. Amin analyses the historical and structural causes of Eurocentrism and points out its contradictions and limitations. He argues for a decentered and plural perspective on world history and the contemporary challenges facing humanity.
The seminar pursues the following goals:
Students should understand and critically reflect Amin's central theses and arguments.
The students should recognise and problematise the Eurocentric perspective on modernity and its consequences for the global South.
The students should get to know and discuss alternative perspectives on world history and the global present. close
