In this course, we will closely read the post-colonial Arabic novel, “al-Shams fi yawm gha‘im” (1973) [Sun on a Cloudy Day (1997)] by the well-known Syrian writer, Hana Mina (1924-2018). We will do three main tasks: first, we will locate the text in its historical and literary context; second, we will examine the language of the text, its style and rhetoric; third, we will study the major thematic contours with special focus on the theme of liberation. close
