SoSe 23: From "Ayn to Lane: Using and Understanding Arabic Dictionaries

Arabic lexicography (the discipline of "writing dictionaries") has existed since the eighth century. Famous works such as Lisan al-arab (13th century) and al-Qamus al-muhit (14th century) are cited until today. Most European Arabic dictionaries are literal translations of these sources. However, to be able use the dictionaries of this old, highly technical and intertextual branche of knowledge, introduction and practice are needed. In which volume do start searching? How do interpret the very concise and at first glance obscure information contained in the entries? And which of the suggested meanings do I choose in the end? In this course, we will learn why we should not (only) use Wehr's dictionary, what are the most important Arabic dictionaries, what purposes each of them serves, how they are structured, what kind of information they provide, and how we can interpret them and benefit from them for our studies and research. close
