SoSe 23: Religious practice – current ethnographic perspectives
Rosalie Stolz
Comments
In this course, we will approach religion with a succinct focus on practice and with an emphasis on current ethnographic approaches. After problematising how we can demarcate religious practices and how to study them, we will inquire into different fields of study including the role of material objects, the affective and somatic aspects of religious practice and encounters, the importance of mobility and space, and the politics of religious practice among others. Based on different case studies from various regions we will ask how we can approach religious practice ethnographically? Which aspects of religious practice need to be considered? When can a practice be called ‘religious’?
This seminar is based on weekly readings. It introduces the participants to current approaches in the anthropology of religion. The students will be guided through the process of finding a topic for a term paper as well as through the first steps of planning and conceptualising the term paper already during the semester.
