SoSe 23: Critical Global Health

This seminar will introduce to and scrutinize Global Health, a phenomenon that medical anthropologist Arthur Kleinman considered to be “more a bunch of problems than a discipline”. It will historically trace the emergence of Global Health as an interdisciplinary field of engagement situated somewhere between International and Planetary Health. It will further explore its specific theoretical and epistemological limitations including narrow understandings of what kinds of health problems are worth being addressed and what counts as evidence for successful health interventions. By looking, for instance, at the neoliberal underpinnings of philanthrocapitalism, the often humanitarian-driven governmentality of transnational NGOs, and the inequalities involved in Global Health research and funding logics, finally, the seminar aims at establishing an alternative, decolonial understanding of how Global Health can be thought and practiced in our contemporary crisis-ridden world. close
