SoSe 23: Critical Living in times of Crises: Anthropological Perspectives on Well-being and Covid-19

Thomas Stodulka

Comments

The global impact of Covid-19 has varied significantly. While some of the reasons for this are not yet known, and remain the remit of virologists and epidemiologists, there are critical social and economic factors that have influenced the response to the pandemic at both state, local, household, and personal levels. It is these dimensions that psychological anthropology is uniquely trained to understand, and which have equal significance for addressing the outcomes of the pandemic as does the pathological. This course attends to the following questions: What lessons can we learn from the ways in which experiences of pandemic and political crisis often evade contemporary theorizing? How can we mobilize those lessons to produce critical thinking that is both sharp and sustainable? The course promotes an expansive and holistic approach to health and wellbeing, a broad view that the global experience of pandemic has made imperative; we use the expansiveness of care – with meanings from ‘compassion’ to ‘infrastructure’ – to work across domains connecting the health of people and the environment. The course includes guest contributions from colleagues in psychological anthropology and critical theory. close
