Alexander was a legendary figure, even in ‘his own day’. In late Antiquity, stories about Alexander’s life and about his miraculous conquests abounded. In the Middle Ages, stories of Alexander’s conquests remained extremely popular and were translated and adapted in(to) most of the European vernacular languages. After a discussion of the genre of romauncepand a brief look at the complicated reception history of the Alexander tradition, we shall primarily read Kyng Alisaunder and the Wars of Alexander, with a focus on constructions of temporality and Otherness.
