SoSe 23: Ancient Palaces: Design, Decoration, Function

Monika Trümper

Comments

In many ancient cultures, the wealthy ruling elite built large complexes that are commonly identified as palaces in research. The term “palace” is derived from the palatine hill in Rome, which housed the residences of the Roman emperors, and it is commonly understood as indicating both an official and a residential function of the respective buildings. The aim of this seminar is to examine, from a diachronic and comparative perspective, the location, size, design, decoration, and function of palaces that varied significantly in different cultures and periods. Special attention is given to current approaches as well as methodological and theoretical discourses in research. While the seminar is offered by the Institute of Classical Archaeology, the seminar should ideally not be limited to examples from the Graeco-Roman world between 800 BC and 400 AD. Examples from other ancient cultures and periods (e.g. Cypriote, Egyptian, West Asian, Etruscan, Minoan/Mycenean, Late Antique) should be included, depending on the interests and competences of the participants. close
