SoSe 23: Protective clothing of the 1st millenium BCE in pictures and in hand (Fashion and technology connecting West and East Asia)

The starting point for this project course is an ca. 2700 year old scale armor excavated near Turfan, Northwest China (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.quaint.2021.11.014). Participants train to start from an object to infer knowledge necessary to understand it and to test hypothetical interpretation through reproduction. Selected aspects of the following topics will be dealt with: Art and archaeology of the 1st millennium BC in China, relief art of the Achaemenids, craft of leather production, history of clothing, forms of publication of research results. An excursion is planned. More about the topics and scheduling will be presented and discussed at the first lecture. close
